Public schools in Gilbert could possibly move the beginning of classes earlier than usual and extend its fall and spring breaks for school year 2022-23.

At a meeting last Feb. 23, suggested modifications for the school calendar have been discussed and are waiting for approval. The motion from board member Lori Wood suggests an extended 2 weeks for the fall, winter and spring breaks.

Concerned of half days with hectic schedules, Wood said that the current school year schedules can negatively impact the learning environment and these modifications are necessary to avoid it.

The Governing Board Members each have their own insights on what the next school year calendar looks like. According to them, some slight changes may be made to the proposal and be back for approval in March.

On the proposed calendar, the school year 2022-23 would start on July 25, 2022, which is nine days earlier if it were to follow the 2-2-2 proposal (extended 2 weeks for fall, winter and spring breaks).

Surveys have shown that this proposal has been agreed to by most parents and staff over the 1-2-1 calendar, which is the current school calendar being used within the district.
