Gilbert Fire & Rescue Offers Tips to Prevent Drowning

As the summer season approaches, Gilbert Fire & Rescue (GFRD) is urging residents to prioritize water safety, particularly when it comes to children. Each year, GFRD responds to tragic water-related incidents involving children, with most drownings occurring between the ages of 2 and 5.

These incidents often happen quickly and quietly, emphasizing the critical importance of preventive measures. To help prevent such tragedies, GFRD advocates for the ABCD’s of Drowning Prevention:

  • Adult Supervision: Ensure vigilant supervision around water at all times.
  • Barriers: Install barriers, such as fences and gates, around pools to restrict access.
  • Classes: Enroll children in swimming lessons and CPR classes.
  • Devices: Use life jackets and other flotation devices when near water.

While in-ground pools pose a significant risk, GFRD emphasizes that water-related incidents can occur in various settings, even in as little as two inches of water. Additional safety tips include:

  • Emptying inflatable pools, buckets, and tubs after use.
  • Never leaving a child unattended in the bathtub, even for a moment.
  • Closing toilet lids and keeping bathroom doors closed.

In the event of a water-related emergency, swift action is crucial:

  • Yell for assistance and remove the individual from the water.
  • Call 911 immediately.
  • If trained in CPR, initiate CPR until professional help arrives. If not trained, follow instructions from emergency dispatchers.

Residents are encouraged to learn more about water safety by visiting the Gilbert Fire & Rescue website at gilbertaz.gov/watersafety. By taking proactive steps and adhering to safety guidelines, residents can help prevent drownings and keep their loved ones safe this summer.
