Gilbert residents, the long-anticipated project to connect Ocotillo Road between Greenfield and Higley roads is finally set to commence, albeit at double the initial estimated cost.
The project, which includes a landmark bridge, is now budgeted at $112 million, up from the original $60 million estimate.
The ambitious extension will feature four structures spanning three waterways and Gilbert Regional Park. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for July 16, with a tentative completion date of July 2026.
Town officials believe that connecting Ocotillo Road will significantly reduce response times for both police and fire services in southern Gilbert. A fire station is located on Ocotillo Road, less than a quarter mile from the current road’s end near Higley.
Councilman Jim Torgeson requested a staff presentation to explain the increased costs. Ryan Blair, CIP manager, clarified that the 2021 estimate of $54 million was preliminary and did not include detailed design work. He noted that construction cost increases and scope refinements led to the current $112 million price tag.
The bridge, which will have four travel lanes, bicycle lanes, and pedestrian pathways, is designed to be more than functional. It will include aesthetic features like lights, arches, and shade structures. The public selected the “Palo Verde” design concept in 2022.
The bridge will also provide additional access to Gilbert Regional Park, easing traffic flow, especially during events like the Fourth of July celebrations.
As Gilbert embarks on this significant infrastructure project, the town council approved the $112 million contract unanimously, with Councilwoman Yung Koprowski absent.
This project marks a significant step forward in enhancing Gilbert’s infrastructure, improving emergency response times, and creating a visually appealing landmark for the community.
