In a momentous event attended by community leaders, business representatives, and various elected officials, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport celebrated the grand opening of its new five-gate terminal concourse on February 21, 2024. The 30,000 sq. ft. expansion, a $28 million project, replaces the aging four-gate, 10,000 sq. ft. portable building erected in 2008.
Funding for this ambitious project came from a diverse range of sources, including grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, FAA Airport Improvement Program, contributions from the State of Arizona, and support from the six Airport Member Communities.
Chip Wilson, the Mayor of Apache Junction and the Chairman of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority’s (PMGAA) Board, expressed his enthusiasm for the new development, stating, “With nearly two million passengers choosing Gateway Airport each year, this new terminal expansion shows PMGAA’s commitment to enhancing the Just Plane Easy travel experience at Gateway Airport.”
The decision to expand the terminal was driven by the airport’s recent record-breaking passenger activity. In 2023, the airport welcomed over 1.9 million passengers, marking the busiest year in its history. Recognizing the need for increased capacity, the new five-gate terminal aims to accommodate the growing number of travelers choosing Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.
Mesa Mayor John Giles highlighted the airport’s pivotal role in boosting economic activity in the region, stating, “Gateway Airport contributes more than $1.8 billion each year to the greater Phoenix economy. Expanding capacity at the Airport unlocks new opportunities for both sun-seeking visitors and local air travelers.”
Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, now equipped with a total of 11 gates, is well-positioned to sustain its remarkable growth trajectory. Allegiant, one of the airport’s major carriers, currently offers nonstop service to 45 popular destinations and plans to increase its summer flight schedule by an impressive 19%. Sun Country also continues to thrive with its seasonal nonstop service to Minneapolis.
J. Brian O’Neill A.A.E., PMGAA’s Executive Director, and CEO highlighted the significance of the new South Concourse, stating, “The new South Concourse provides additional gates and capacity just in time to welcome hundreds of thousands of spring travelers to Arizona. The facility also positions Gateway Airport for continued passenger growth in the future.”
