The decision comes after town staff presented findings from a rate study conducted by Walker Consultants during the Town Council Study Session on March 5. Following deliberations, the council directed staff to issue a Notice of Intent regarding the introduction of fees for the use of all Town-owned EV charging stations.
The Gilbert Town Council prepares to vote on the proposed charges at its meeting on June 18, 2024. If approved, the new fees will be effective from August 1, 2024, impacting all Town-owned EV charging stations. The proposed fee structure outlined in the study suggests:
$0.25 per kWh for the first four hours of charging
$0.70 per kWh for charging beyond four hours
$5.00 per hour idle fee for vehicles not actively charging
$175 fine for non-electric vehicles or EVs not plugged into charging stations parked in designated EV spaces.
These fees are intended to manage usage and promote efficient utilization of charging infrastructure. Residents are encouraged to review the Notice of Intent and Electric Vehicle Charging Pricing and Policy Study for more details ahead of the upcoming council meeting.
This move signals Gilbert’s commitment to adapting its infrastructure to accommodate the growing demand for EVs while ensuring fair access and sustainability.
Stay tuned for updates following the council’s decision on this matter.
