According to a recent analysis by Chamber of Commerce, Gilbert has been ranked as one of the top cities in the United States for Generation X to retire. The study, which examined 170 cities across the country, placed Gilbert 5th on the list, making it one of four Metro Phoenix suburbs to feature in the top 10. Scottsdale, Chandler, and Peoria also secured spots in the 6th, 7th, and 8th positions, respectively.
The ranking was determined based on a variety of factors that are important to Gen Xers as they approach retirement, including affordability, safety, health, and demographic appeal.
Specifically, the analysis looked at housing affordability, cost of living, tax friendliness, life expectancy, access to healthcare, migration trends, and crime rates.
The highlights that contributed to its high ranking for Gilbert include:
- Life Expectancy: 78.2 years
- Gen X Median Household Income: $132,719
- Median Real Estate Taxes: $2,301
- Patient to Physician Ratio: 1,430:1
- Gen Xers as a Percentage of Population: 13.71%
Nationwide, a survey revealed that 25% of Americans, including 27% of Gen Xers, have no retirement savings. Additionally, more than half of Americans (54%) and 39% of Gen Xers believe that Social Security will be insolvent by the time they retire. Furthermore, 39% of Gen Xers fear they may never be able to retire.
With cities in Texas, Arizona, and Florida dominating the list of the most ideal places for Gen Xers to retire, the Phoenix area stands out as a particularly attractive region. The Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Frisco, Texas, topped the list overall, largely due to its high percentage of Gen X residents and a life expectancy of 81.6 years, which is notably higher than the average of 78.5 years among the cities analyzed.
With a robust median household income, favorable real estate taxes, and a solid healthcare infrastructure, Gilbert offers a balanced and appealing environment for its aging residents.
